Blockchain Student Alliance to Fill Education Gaps in Universities
The Blockchain Student Alliance (BSA), launched by Bitskwela, aims to bridge the educational gaps present in universities regarding blockchain technology. According to BusinessWorld Online, this initiative is designed to provide students with practical experience and knowledge about blockchain fundamentals, its real-life applications, and cryptocurrencies within the digital economy. Supported by Sonic Labs—a leader in blockchain innovation—the program offers hands-on skills through Sonic University. This educational effort seeks to empower individuals interested in exploring career opportunities within the burgeoning field of blockchain.
BSA's head Andrea Pilapil and Bitskwela CEO Jiro Reyes have already conducted workshops for over 500 students across various institutions such as Mapua University and Manila Central University from October to November. Despite growing curiosity among students about blockchain technology, many still lack essential hands-on experience needed for a comprehensive understanding of its tools and use cases. Ms. Pilapil emphasized that while conceptual knowledge exists, there remains an urgent need for project-based learning approaches.
A significant challenge highlighted by Ms. Pilapil involves educating non-tech students on how they can leverage blockchain’s potential beyond traditional tech fields—such as supply chains or healthcare systems—and even voting mechanisms. Hermoso Tupas Jr., an instructor at the University of Southeastern Philippines echoed these sentiments, stating it was crucial since today's learners are tomorrow’s innovators who must be aware of emerging technologies like blockchains, which grow increasingly relevant every day.
Ms. Pilapil further suggested integrating interdisciplinary programs into university curricula, where introductory courses could cover business aspects alongside computer science principles, allowing broader access, especially when combined with practical projects aimed towards building solutions using said technologies; thereby creating research hubs hosting hackathon competitions showcasing industry leaders' involvement too! The edutech firm plans to continue BSA tours throughout 2025, focusing on more interactive activities connecting academia directly, engaging stakeholders involved in ecosystem development efforts, ensuring future generations remain well-equipped to tackle challenges ahead, confidently prepared to embrace change wholeheartedly!
