What Is a Routing Attack?
A Routing Attack occurs when a bad actor manipulates the network by which cryptocurrency transactions are confirmed. This manipulation can lead to the interception or rerouting of data between participants in a crypto exchange or an all-in-one platform.
How Does It Affect Crypto Exchanges?
In the world of cryptocurrencies, security and trust are paramount. A Routing Attack can undermine both by potentially altering or delaying the transmission of crucial transaction data. For exchanges, this poses a great risk as it could manipulate the actual execution of trades or even lead to the theft of funds.
Common Types of Routing Attacks
There are several forms of Routing Attacks, but two primary types are commonly discussed within crypto exchanges:
- BGP Hijacking - This happens when attackers take control of the routing instructions for Internet data to divert traffic to their own networks.
- ARP Spoofing - Attackers send fake address resolution protocol messages to link their MAC address with the IP address of a legitimate computer or server within the network to intercept data.
